A reddish-yellow liquid, b.p. 135.6 °C (277 °F), which evolves poisonous fumes at room temperature and is extremely irritating to the eyes and skin. Its formula is S2Cl2 (sulfur monochloride); it is produced by direct reaction between gaseous chlorine and liquid sulfur.
Note :
It is used in the manufacture of chemicals, in dilute solution as a vulcanizing agent for dipped rubber products, and in the manufacture of factice and insecticides. It should be kept out of contact with water, with which it reacts strongly. It is classed as a corrosive liquid. Sulfur dichloride (SCl2), b.p. 59 °C (138 °F), has similar properties and applications.
