Date :Définition
A derivative of benzene in which two of the hydrogen atoms are replaced by methyl groups, C6H4(CH3)2. It can be distilled from petroleum or coal-tar, or made from straight-run gasoline by catalytic reactions or from toluene by transalkylation.
Clear, flammable liquid with uses as an intermediate for a number of organic chemicals, as a solvent for rubber cements, protective coatings and alkyd resins.Note :
Xylene occurs in three isomeric forms (ortho-, meta-, and para-), the commercial product being a mixture. The ortho- isomer is the source of the plasticizer phtahalic anhydride and the paraisomer is oxidized to form trephthalic acid. Xylene is also a useful solvent and intermediate for dyes and pharmaceuticals. While less flammable than benzeine, it should be protected from direct ignition sources. The word is adapted from the Greek term for wood (xylos), presumably because it was first found there.
