Date :Définition
A staturated fatty acid having the forumula C17H35COOH; it is a dull whitish solid which softens at about 65° C (150° F). The most widely used material of its kind in industry, it is derived from animal fats such as tallow by hydrolysis, followed by refining and pressing.
Note :
Commercial grades may contain substantial proportions of other fatty acids. One of the major uses of stearic acid is as a raw material for soap manufacture by reaction of its ester with a metal hydroxide. Another is in rubber mixes, in which it has two distinct functions: it is particularly effective in wetting and dispersing carbon black particles in invulcanized rubber, and is thus an important ingredient of tire treads and other abrasion-resistant products; (b) it notably increases the vulcanizing efficiency of acidic acelerators. Stearic acid is also used in the manufacture of stearates, candles, and shoe polishes, and as an emulsifying agent.
