Date :Définition
An organic liquid derived from coal tar or by reacting methyl alcohol with phenol. It is closely related to phenol, of which it usually contains low percentages as impurity. The basic formula for cresol is CH3C6H4OH; it is available either as a mixture of three isomers (ortho-, meta-, and para-) or as any one of these. It has a strong odor suggestive of a disinfectant; the pure materials is a skin irritant, and its fumes are also corrosive to the lungs.
Note :
Its major uses are as a disinfectant, as a chemical intermediate, and in phenolic resins. A similar product, creosote, is also derived from coal tar and is used chiefly as a wood preservative. Both cresol and creosote can also be obtained from distillation of wood tar.
