A polyhydric alcohol derived by a condensation reaction between formaldehyde and acetaldehyde (the so-called aldol reaction); the formula is C(CH2OH)4.
Note :
A crystalline solid, it is used in plasticizers, rosin-based varnishes and alkyd resins, and also as the basic component of specialized cross-linking agents and antioxidants. Its most noteworthy derivative is pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), a powerful initiating explosive.
