Any of a number of iron-oxygen compounds in which the iron appears in several oxidation states, e.g., FeO, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, or mixture of these. In finely divided form they have colors ranging from dark reddish black to dull red. The last is the best-known (Fe2O3) and is variously called burnt sienna, Turkey red, Indian red, red oxide, and rouge. Special preparations of irons oxide are iron sponge and iron mass, in which the fineground oxide is mixed with wood particles.
Note :
It is generally used as colorant in plastics, rubber, paint, cosmetic preparations, etc., and in the removal of sulfides from gases. A synthetic type is used as an abrasive for polishing glass (especially mirrors). The darkest iron oxide, which has magnetic properties, is used in recording tapes and electronic devices.
