A heavy white powder (ZnO) produced by several methods, chiefly the burning of zinc vapor in air. It is a strong ultraviolet absorber.
Note :
It has a number of important industrial uses; as a reinforcing agent and white pigment in rubber products, filled plastics, etc.; as a paint pigment; and as the basis of emollient creams and ointments. Its has the unique ability to active rubber accelarators more efficiently than any other substance; were it not this property, rubber vulcanizates suitable for most conditions might never have been possible.
