Date :Définition
A type of chemical bond (often called electrostatic) in which atoms of different element unite by transferring one or more electrons from one atom to the other to form an ionizing or polar compound. For example, an element such as sodium which has but one electron in its outer shell readily links with chlorine, which has seven; this provides a total of eight electrons (characteristic of argon), which is energetically ideal. The sodium loses its electron and thus becomes positively charged, while the chlorine gains the electron and becomes negatively charged.
Note :
Bonds of this kind are less stable than covalent bonds; the compounds formed will dissociate into ions when dissolved in water, as a result of the high dielectric constant of the water, which reduces the strength of the bond to the point of rupture.
