Date :Définition
The geometric isomer of natural rubber, which is cis-polyisoprene; the molecular formula of the two substances is the same (C5H8), the only difference being that in gutta percha, the methyl group is on the opposite side of the hydrocarbon chain, in the transposition.
Note :
Unlike rubber, gutta percha is definitely crystalline, but it can be vulcanized with sulfur; it lacks the resilience and elastic recovery of rubber, and for this reason it has little commercial value. Some applications are in cable covers, electrical insulation, and dentistry.
