Date :Définition
As originally used in organic dye chemistry, this term referred to a compound midway in the reaction sequence between the starting material and the terminal product. For example: (1) benzene may be reduced to aniline, the parent substance of a large family of dyes; (2) oxidation of naphthalene gives phthalic anhydride, from which are produced plasticizers, dyes, resins, and pharmaceuticals. In these examples, aniline and phthalic anhydride are intermediates. The situation is similar with phenol and other aromatic compounds.
Intermediates: Manufactured chemicals which are used in further chemical operations to produce end-products such as dyes, drugs, etc.Note :
In current terminology, the meaning has been extended to include many straight-chain (acyclic) materials which themselves have many important end uses, as well as being sources for useful derivatives, e.g., ethyl alcohol, chloral, etc. Thus, the term intermediate is much less specific now than formerly and is often loosely used for any organic compound from which many others can be made.
