Définitions :
Procédé d'extraction tertiaire de pétroles, généralement visqueux, situés à de moyennes ou faibles profondeurs ((qui)) consiste à mettre le pétrole en ignition, et à créer un front de combustion qui balaye l'ensemble du gisement.
Méthode de production d'huile visqueuse dans laquelle cette dernière est poussée vers les puits de production, à partir d'un puits d'injection, par un flux d'air alimentant un front de combustion qui fluidifie l'huile située en aval du front.
Note :
Il existe deux méthodes : combustion directe - combustion inverse. Ce procédé peut être applicable à des gisements qui ont subi un balayage par l'eau - water flooding - (extraction secondaire).

An experimental means of recovery of oil of low gravity and high viscosity which is unrecoverable by other methods "and which" consists of heating the oil in the horizon to increase its mobility by decreasing its viscosity.
Note :
Heat is applied by igniting the oil sand and the fire is kept alive by the injection of air. The heat breaks the oil down into coke and lighter oils, and the coke catches fire. A other combustion front advances, the lighter oils move into the bore of a producing well.
