A division of the general area of economics which is concerned primarily with the employment situation and the relation of the worker to his job. The areas covered include the labor market, the general problems of real wages, hours, and working conditions, as well as many aspects of social security. It is a division of economics similar to the area of banking economics, transposition economics, or marketing economics. Some indication of the scope of the field of labor economics may be had from an examination of a general current text in this area which may cover, among other things, labor in the industrial society; population and migration; the labor force; the theories of the labor movement; labor union government; the scope, objectives and legal context of collective bargaining; wage theories; the labor market; wages and employment; the wage structure and wage supplements; wages and the national income; unemployment; technological change and unemployment; hours of work; workmen's compensation; old-age benefits; and the general area of public assistance. The field of labor economics is a dynamic one and the scope and substance of the field have been enlarged to a great extent in the past few decades.
