The list indicates the priority of the individual based on his continuous service within the plant or other unit depending on the particular contract provision. The seniority lists may be set up on the basis of their actual operation in the plant, such as a departmental seniority list or a plant-wide seniority list. The purpose is to let the individual employee know where he stands on the seniority roster so that he may protect his rights as set forth in the collective bargaining contract. The seniority lists are generally available to the union shop steward or other union representative.
