Description d'une parcelle de terre par renvoi aux directions (points de repère, c'est-à-dire les coins est ou ouest, le nord véritable ou le sud véritable) et aux distances (mètres, pieds ou chaînes) de chaque ligne droite dormant son périmètre, l'un des coins étant lié à un point préétabli.

C'est une série de directions et de distances à partir d'un point établi, tel qu'un coin de section, ou l'intersection des lignes centrales de deux routes, etc.
