Caoutchouc synthétique dérivé du pétrole, obtenu par copolymérisation d'isobutylène et d'isopropène, présentant une bonne résistance à l'ozone et une faible perméabilité aux gaz, utilisé notamment pour la fabrication de joints d'étanchéité.

An early form of synthetibber, butyl can be used as a component of tire carcases, though it is not especially suitable for treads. It is superior to natural rubber in resistance to attack by oxygen and ozone, in dielectric strength, and particularly in ability to retain gases, a property which makes it valuable as an inner lining for tubeless tires and for inner tubes.
In latex form it is an excellent insulating material for wires and cables, as well as for coating fabrics and composites.Terme :
