Two or more astronomical observatories separated by large distances aim their radio telescopes towards a common celestial source, usually a known radio galaxy, whose emissions are recorded at each observatory. These signals are subsequently compared to determine the difference in arrival time of a given radio wavefront, and the time differences are analysed to determine the precise distance between the stations by simple interferometric trigonometry.
