Under certain conditions, the work required to effect the introduction at slow and constant speed of a part of a solid surface into a liquid phase differs from that corresponding to the comparable withdrawal of the same part of the surface from the liquid phase. The difference between these two quantities, related to unit surface area, represents a hysteresis termed wetting hysteresis. It is expressed in joules (J) and is numerically equal to the difference between the advancing and receding wetting tensions.
Note :
1J = 107 erg.
