A member of certain genera of the beetle family Buprestidae, whose larvae tunnel in the bark and wood of living, generally damaged or dying, trees, or of recently felled trees and logs.
Note :
(1) The larvae are recognizable mainly by their flattened thoracic segments. (2) [USA] The flatheaded borer Buprestis apricans, which lays its eggs on the dried or burnt-out faces of resin-tapped trees, into which the larvae tunnel, is termed the turpentine borer.
