In a crop or stand, the progressive reduction of space between crowns as they spread laterally, increasing the canopy density, ((is termed)) "canopy closure".
(1) A canopy (and therefore the crop or stand) in which the individual crowns are nearing general contact with one another ("horizontal closure") or whose crown cover is doing so ("vertical closure") is termed a "close canopy"; and having achieved contact, a "closed canopy", whatever the shade density of the individual crowns may be. (2) So long as the canopy is not closed, the trees are generally considered to be "free-growing". (3) Crown "closure" is more properly termed crown "thickening", (antonym "thinning") in terms of both depth and the closer growth of branches and foliage, which together determine its over-all density.Terme :
