Date :Note :
The term was originally defined as equivalent to the "subsistence wage" or a wage barely sufficient to permit the individual to stay alive. The broadening of the concept of a living wage to incorporate more than subsistence developed over a period of time on the insistence of workers as well as the public toward the concept of living standard which began to include reasonable needs and comforts. It is now generally considered to be a wage which will provide the basic minimum needs, such as food, clothing, and shelter, recreation, education, and similar factors which have become common in the general community. The concept of a wage sufficient to take care of minimum health, recreational, and educational needs will tend to be flexible, since there is a constant development in standards.
