Terme ancien ayant d'abord désigné l'enveloppe moyenne de la Terre considérée alors comme formée de trois couches (sial, sima, nifé), puis ayant été étendu à la croûte océanique.

Originally, the sima was considered basaltic in composition with a specific gravity of about 3.0. In recent years, it has been suggested that the sima is periotitic in composition with a specific gravity of about 3.3.
