The upper Palaeozoic period (350-270 millions years ago) when rocks of the carboniferous system were laid down, including the majority of the world's hard (anthracite) and bituminous coals.
Note :
Much of the world's oil also come from carboniferous accumulations, particularly in the USSR, Argentina and east coast USA. American geologists sub-divide the carboniferous system into the Mississipian, Pennsylvanian and Permian systems, but in Europe the Permian is regarded as a major system which followed the carboniferous.
