Date :Définition
A persistent (i.e., nonbiodegradable) insecticide which is a mixture of isomers of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (a chlorinated hydrocarbon) having the formula (ClC6H4)2CHCCl3. It is derived from chloral and chlorobenzene by a condensation reaction.
A compound highly toxic as a contact insecticide.Note :
In the United States it has been chiefly used on cotton and tobacco, as well as for mosquito control; it is still widely used as a general insecticide in India. DDT has been reported to be harmful to man only when ingested as such, but there is no evidence of any fatalities or direct harm to man from its legitimate use. Some studies have found that DDT is harmful to certain species of fish and bird life, but other studies have not confirmed this. However, despite the lack of agreement among scientists about its ecological effects, its use in the United States was probihited in 1972. This order was later modified to permit its use to control the destructive tussock moth, against which it is the only effective insecticide.
