[rolltop desk] Term introduced in the mid-19th century to describe an office desk or bureau with the top closed by a tambour.
The term tambour writing table was given to a variety of desk or secretary with a tambour top. It had an oblong top over a solid wooden cylinder which, when rolled back, revealed a fitted interior with drawers, pigeonholes and a pull-out leather-lined slide.
