A long-acting form of antipsychotic drug that is administered parenterally usually by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, as maintenance therapy.
Note :
Esterification of fluphenazine, for example, markedly extends the drug's duration of effect, and a single injection of fluphenazine decanoate may be effective in controlling symptoms for two or more weeks. Because the depot form of the drug is released slowly, over so long a period, each dose administered is typically much larger than that required when the drug is given by mouth one or more times a day. In consequence, such maintenance therapy is sometimes termed megadose treatment (q.v.).
