When the liquid is in a closed container, the boiling point may be defined as the temperature at which the liquid and its vapour are in equilibrium, that is, when evaporation and condensation are occurring at the same rate at constant atmospheric pressure. The temperature is the same in both cases.
The boiling point is increased somewhat by the presence of molecules of dissolved substances and substantially by the presence of ions. It decreases with decreasing atmospheric pressure.
