The overall costs to any society resulting from the consumption, production and distribution of alcohol and embracing such sectors as health and welfare, industry, road traffic, law enforcement and the penal system.
Note :
These costs have also been called the "adverse costs of alcohol" in the context of society seeking to minimize the number and severeness of alcohol problems. Illustrations of the extent of alcohol-related problems in money terms can be used to support advocacy for investments in the prevention and treatment of alcohol-related problems and to counterbalance claims as to the economic benefits of alcohol.
