A vast number of such dyes have been synthesized since William Henry Perkin, an English chemist (1838-1907), developed the original compound mauveine in 1856. One of the largest groups is the azo dyes, but there are many other types including aniline, anthraquinone (alizarin), and sulfonic acid derivatives. Some types are water-soluble, but others are not; there are both acidic and basic dyes. Many dyes require the use of other compounds (called assistants) in order to be effective in combining with the fibre. The chemistry and technology of dyes and dyeing is an extremely complex subject.
