The terms "starved air combustion" and "pyrolysis", though often used interchangeably, are not one and the same. Pyrolysis denotes a method of burning hazardous waste by heating in the absence of oxygen.
The term starved-air gasification is commonly used when referring to this notion. However, gasification is not synonymous with combustion; the result of gasification is carbon monoxide whereas the result of combustion is carbon dioxide, water and the production of heat.Termes :
