Définition :
Grandeur pe définie par les relations pe = y - yW/ yd - yW ou pe = x - xW/xd - xW, dans lesquelles x et y sont les coordonnées trichromatiques du stimulus de couleur considéré et xd et yd celles du stimulus monochromatique ayant la même longueur d'onde que la longueur d'onde dominante du stimulus de couleur considéré; xW et yW sont les coordonnées trichromatiques du stimulus achromatique spécifié.
Notes :
Pour les stimuli de couleur qui n'ont pas de longueur d'onde dominante, on doit attribuer à xd et yd les valeurs des coordonnées trichromatiques du point correspondant sur la limite des pourpres.
On doit choisir entre la formule en x ou en y celle dont les nombres ont la plus grande valeur absolue.
Dans le système de référence colorimétrique supplémentaire CIE 1964, la pureté d'excitation pe, 10 est définie par les mêmes relations dans lesquelles on remplace x et y par x10 et y10.

Quantity pe defined by the following relations pe = y - yW/yd - yW or pe = x-xw/xd - xW, x and y are the chromaticity coordinates of the colour stimulus considered, xd and yd those of the monochromatic light stimulus having the same wavelength as the dominant wavelength of the colour stimulus considered; xW and yW are the chromaticity coordinates of the specified achromatic light stimulus.
Notes :
For colour stimuli for which no dominant wavelength exists the chromaticity coordinates to be taken for xd and yd are those of the corresponding point on the purple boundary.
Whether the formula in x or that in y is to be taken depends on which gives the numerator the greater numerical values.
In the CIE 1964 supplementary standard colorimetric system, the excitation purity pE, 10 is defined by the same relations in which x10 and y10 are taken instead of x and y.Terme :
