Note :

A term applicable to telegraph signalling systems in which one or more particular frequencies correspond to each desired signalling condition of a telegraph code. The transition from one set of frequencies to the other may be either a continuous or a discontinuous change in frequency and may be accompanied by a change in phase.
Note :
The term ((...)) relates in general only to conventional systems of telegraphy using the Morse Code (or its variants), or equal length binary codes such as the 5-unit code; ((it)) relates more particularly to machine telegraph systems in which telegraph signals are automatically generated at the transmitter and automatically translated into a printed character or other appropriate signification at the receiver.
