The term reducing also covers a variety of operations in which the diameters of a tubular part is decreased over a certain length. These may be performed by a variety of methods in addition to common die forming by means of a simple die and punch assembly. The types of reducing operations that are suitable for die forming are those which relate to the contour of the upper portion of the tubular part. These are necking, rimming, tapering, nosing, and closing. Necking and rimming are identical operations, comprising a reduction to a constant diameter. Their only difference is that necking extends only over a fraction of the part length, while rimming reduces the entire part diameter, except for that at thebottom. On the other hand, tapering, nosing, and closing differ from necking and rimming in that the top of the tubular part is reshaped to a definite die contour. Very large reductions from the original diameter of the part to that of the minimum diameter of the reduced section, or nose, are obtained in nosing and closing.
