Despite the growing interest in plug casting and fly fishing, more angling is still done with bait than with any other method. Fishing from the banks of a stream or lake or from an anchored boat is the most common method of using bait, although it is also used in trolling and to a more limited extent in casting. There are two broad groups into which baits naturally fall : those used in fresh and those used in salt waters. Natural foods usually head the list, but many substances that can by no means be so classified are successfully used in bait fishing. Only the baits most widely used, together with methods of securing, preparing, and using them can be presented.
