Note :
Son origine est rapportée à l'absorption de boissons très chaudes et d'alcool, mais le tabac joue aussi un rôle. Il survient surtout chez l'homme. Il est de sombre pronostic, car son début est insidieux, par la dysphagie (gêne à avaler), qui ne le révèle souvent qu'à un stade avancé et au-dessus des ressources d'une chirurgie déjà difficile dans cette région. Le diagnostic est avant tout radiologique et précise la localisation exacte et l'extension; l'œsophagoscopie permet la biopsie, surtout si la lésion est minime, et, par là, la détermination du type histologique.

Most cancers of the esophagus are undifferentiated epidermoid carcinomas. They may arise in the upper, middle, or low portion of the passage and often develop in the form of bulky, fungus-like growths that rapidly close the esophagus. Others may ulcerate superficially and spread to the surface of the structure without much obstruction. Cancer of the esophagus metastasize early.
