Parmi les médicaments cytotoxiques fabriqués synthétiquement, les moutardes à l'azote ont pris une place importante. Certaines d'entre elles sont actives contre la leucémie lymphoïde et les séminomes (cancers du testicule), d'autres contre la leucémie myéloïde chronique.

The modern era of chemotherapy is considered to have begun during World War II, when research on poison gases showed that mustard gas interferes markedly with the growth of cells. The development of a related substance, nitrogen mustard, provided a drug that was and is still of great value in the treatment of certain types of cancers, particularly lymphomas, chronic leukemias, and carcinomas originating in the lung and ovary.
