Magnus effect: the additional aerodynamic forces produced on a rapidly spinning body (especially when symmetrical with respect to the relative stream) moving through a fluid, due to the component of velocity normal to the axis of rotation. The body is deflected at right angles to both the stream and its axis and moves to the side where its peripheral motion is in the same direction as the stream. The classical case is the lift on an infinite circular cylinder hung up in an air current moving at right angles to its axis.
