Two common bit-oriented schemes use the pattern 01111110 as both preamble and postamble. To avoid the appearance of this pattern in the data stream, the transmitter will always insert an extra 0 bit after each occurrence of five 1's in the data to be transmitted. When the receiver detects a sequence of five 1's, it examines the next bit. If the bit is 0, the receiver deletes it. This procedure is known as bit stuffing.
