Date :Note :
The use of higher temperatures in the efforts to improve the thermal efficiency of heat engines has led to the demand for metals or alloys that can withstand oxidation, have good tensile strength and other mechanical properties at elevated temperatures and have a high resistance to creep; such materials are referred to as "heat-resistance", since they resist to a marked degree changes in those properties, chemical and mechanical, that are essential to good service, but which tend to deteriorate with rise in temperature; heat-resisting steels contain relatively large proportions of nickel and chromium, together with niobium, molybdenum or tungsten, the presence of one or more of the last three being essential for good creep resitance; non-ferrous heat-resisting alloys contain mainly nickel and chromium.
