A coarse grass from Southern Spain and Northern Africa, obtained from two species, lygeum spartum and stipa tenacissima. It is generally cooked with caustic soda alone or with sodium sulphide. Fibres are short and relatively fine and wiry. It is employed principally by English and Scottish papermakers for the production of better grades of book paper.

Not to be confused with alpha cellulose.
