Boulle's ponderous specimens of commodes were known as commodes en tombeau or tomb-like commodes.
It is generally believed that the table-commode en tombeau had its provenance in the Italian cassone of sarcophagus form. It was first executed by Boulle for the Chamber of Louis XIV at the Palais de Trianon. The top of the table extended beyond two large and superimposed drawers of swelling form, which were mounted on four short and straight legs.Terme :
