Early in the 18th century a specialized form of chair for use in libraries was introduced, padded and generally convered with leather. It had an adjustable wooden rest for reading and writing, and below the arms were hinged trays with three circular wells, brass candle brackets folding underneath. The back of the writing chair was curved and formed of one solid piece of wood. The arms bowed outwardly, and finished on their curved supports.
