((These games are)) originating in the early days of the Scottish clans and conducted in the Scottish Highlands. Modern Highland games include flat and hurdle races, long and high jumps, pole vault, hammer throw, and shot put. Caber tossing ((...)) is an exclusively Scottish event. Competitions are also conducted in bag pipe playing, Gaelic singing, and dancing. The standard dances are the reel, fling, and sword dance. Dances were performed only by men until the early 20th century, when women were allowed to compete. Caledonian societies in Canada and the United States hold Highland games more or less according to the traditional customs. (Frank K. Perkins, Boston "Herold").
