A vector instrument which uses the nonlinear magnetic characteristics of its sensor core material for measuring the magnitude and sense of the ambient magnetic field along the axis of the probe.
Notes :
A typical probe consists of a core of high permeability material which saturates at a relatively low flux density and 2 solenoids wound around it.
The alternating premagnetization field drives the sensor core cyclically into positive and negative saturation regions. Even harmonics appear in the current waveform due to polarization from the external field, giving a measure of the field strength. Such probes have been used on spin-stabilized satellites to measure the component of magnetic field parallel to the spin axis.Terme :
