Date :Définition
The removal of sulphur from coal, crude petroleum, petroleum fractions, or natural gas carried out prior to further refining or use. Desulphurization is essential in order to overcome problems associated with corrosion, catalyst poisoning and air pollution and is widely employed in the petroleum refining industry as most crude oils contain sulphur as an impunity. Natural gas may contain hydrogen sulphide as an impunity; such gas is referred to as 'acid' or 'sour' and the sulphide impurity is removed by washing with aqueous alkali. Most coals contain sulphur impurities which usually reappear as sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere, though fluidized-bed processes offer the opportunity of reduction in air pollution by combining the sulphur chemically in the combustion chamber.
