The term "mental models" has been given its most specific instantiation by Johnson-Laird. It is assumed that mental models are constructed in the minds of individuals to enable them to make inferences and to reason about the world. Available accounts do not define the nature of mental models with any great degree of specificity, but it is argued that human reasoning is better captured in an account of mental models than it is by an account based on a hypothetical mental logic. The mental models approach has been applied to such topics as syllogistic reasoning, inference, word meaning and the comprehension of discourse.
