Common substances that act as ligands are ammonia, water, and chlorine. When organic nitrogen compounds behave as ligands, a heterocyclic rings is formed, and the product is called a chelate. The number of points of attachment of the ligand to the metal is called its coordination number and is normally 2, 4, or 6. Ligands which coordinate by donation of electrons from more than one atom are known as bidentate (e.g., ethylenediamine), tridentate, and so on, the multidentate type being the most stable. Ligands may be neutral, positively charged, or negatively charged.
