Mottled iron is usually regarded as a medium silicon pig iron in which about half the total carbon is present as graphite, which exists in the form of star-shaped masses; these latter give rise to the characteristic mottled fractures; the material is hard, brittle and practically unmachinable; mottled cast iron is intermediate between white and grey iron, and the fracture shows grey and white zones; moderately slow cooling of iron containing small amounts of silicon produces mottled cast iron; it is difficult to work, but has good casting properties, and its lack of good mechanical properties in tension is partly compensated in some applications by its good compression stregth.
