When carbon is added to a melt of ferro-tantalum, a pasty mass consisting largely of tantalum carbide is formed; when this mass is washed with hydrochloric acid a fine powder separates; this is the tantalum carbide used as an abrasive or as a basis from which are made sintered carbode alloy tools; if tantalum is added to carbon steel, the iron carbide is reduced, and after hardening by quenching the tantalum carbide appears; such steels are useful for making high-speed cutting tools.
