A compound readily produced by fusing titanium dioxide with carbon or with calcium carbide; so obtained it is a dark grey mass having a crystalline fracture and specific gravity of 4.25; it is mixed with tungsten carbide in the making of some sintered carbide making of some sintered carbide cutting tools; it is extremely hard, and lighter in weight and less costly than tungsten carbide; with nickel or cobalt as the binder it is used in making heat-resisting parts where high strength is required and the oxidising conditions are not too severe; the cobalt alloys are useful up to about 860 °C and the nickel alloys up to about 1,400 °C; the carbide is used also in making arc lamp electrodes.
