A steely-white metal closely akin to magnesium, which has a very low specific gravity (1,82) and melts at 1,284 °C; it has a great affinity for oxygen, and when in powder form burns with a brilliant light when ignited in air; at ordinary temperatures beryllium is very brittle, but it can be forged and hot rolled to a certain extent; the metal is extracted from beryl, which occurs as an accessory mineral in acid igneous rocks, and is obtained as a by-product from felspar, mica and lithium ores.
